    What tori is

tori is a discovery tool and reader for books that are free to read: works in the public domain, and open-access or openly licensed titles published for free by their rights holders.

For the main catalogue, tori hosts nothing. Every file you download there comes directly from the library that published it, such as Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, the Internet Archive, Wikisource or a publisher's own open-access catalogue. The one exception is the shared library, described below.

    How titles are included

A title only appears when a real, working file can be found at one of those sources. When no file can be confirmed, the title is left out rather than shown with a broken link.

Public-domain titles can be downloaded and read offline. Openly licensed titles are shown with their licence and the attribution the licence requires. Where a rights holder offers reading on their own site only, tori links out to them and offers no download.

    Books shared by readers

The shared library holds books uploaded by readers with an account, and those files are stored by tori so other readers can read them. Only two kinds of book may be published there: the uploader's own original writing, or a book that is out of copyright. For an out-of-copyright book the uploader must state the original author, the year of first publication, and why the work is out of copyright, and that statement is shown on the book's page alongside the uploader's name.

Uploaders confirm that they hold the rights, or that the work is out of copyright, before a book goes live. Every shared book carries a report button, uploaders can unpublish their own books at any time, and we remove any book on a credible rights complaint. Ratings are shown as an average of readers' stars.

If you are a rights holder and a shared book infringes your copyright, write to contact@phixera.com with the title and a link, and we will take it down. We keep a record of removals and of the rights statement the uploader gave.

    Your responsibility

Copyright terms differ from country to country. A work that is in the public domain where the source library operates may still be in copyright where you live. You are responsible for making sure your use of any file complies with the law in your country.

    Advertising

tori may show advertising from Google AdSense on browsing pages to keep the app free. The reading view carries no advertising, and no advertising is placed alongside titles whose licence does not permit commercial use.

    Your data

You can browse and read without an account. Your library, reading places and bookmarks are kept on your device. If you create an account, they are also saved to your account so they follow you to your other devices — and only you can see them. Signing out leaves your books on the device.

    Contact, copyright and takedown

If you believe something here infringes a copyright, or you have a suggestion or a title you'd like added, write to us and we'll act on it.
